Marijan Ante Mijat, age 81, died peacefully at his home, with his wife Josie and son Marko by his side, in San Pedro, California on June 6, 2016. Marijan was beloved by his family and friends, especially in the Croatian community. Born February 12, 1935 on the Island of Prvic-Sepurine, Croatia, arriving to the US in 1969 to join his father who arrived in the late 1930s and mother, and two sisters who arrived in the early 50s. Second day in the US, Marijan was hired in the offshore marine industry due to his specialized machinery skills, years later progressively working on customized mechanical parts for aerospace. Marijan worked extensively his entire life, was an avid reader, with a passion for history, geography, people and sports. Besides being a very loving and supportive father and husband, he always hoped to see Croatia regain its freedom. He is predeceased by his parents; Ana and Sime Mijat, son, Marjan Kuzma Mijat and sister Ruza Marincovich; and survived by his wife of fiftysix years Josie and son Marko, sister Zvonimira, nieces Lisa, Lori, Karolina and nephew John, Godsons Nick Ljubic and Michael Sestic, Goddaughters Mary Ann Milutin and Karolina Vukojevic Gomez, along with family and friends in Los Angeles, NY, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany and Australia. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, 1-7 p.m. followed by a Vigil Service 7:00 p.m. at McNerney's Mortuary. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, June 16th, at 12:30pm at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 870 W. 8th St., San Pedro, CA 90731. Interment will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park.
