Ivan (Sokol) was in the merchant navy since he was 14 years old. He left Šepurina for the last time in 1939. He worked on the SS Kupa on a ship bound for the Tocapilla, Chile from where he sought to emigrate to the United States. He entered the US lawfully at Wilmington North Carolina, under the name Ivan Franić, and made his way to New York where his father-in-law lived as well as many others from Šepurina.
